What Is CHMM

CHMM - Certified Hazardous Materials Manager

The CHMM is a national designation for persons who use, control, administrate, train, or regulate hazardous materials in the workplace. The certification is awarded by the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM). A professional organization, the Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers (ACHMM) consists of more than 6,000 hazardous materials professionals in the United States. The CHMM is an environmental professional who has demonstrated the competence and qualification to handle the responsibility for complex aspects of hazardous material management. The CHMM examination covers laws and regulations, science and technology, management principles, and work practices. The CHMM designation is about ten years old. The IHMM is attempting to make the CHMM equivalent to a professional engineer designation. Several government and private business organizations recognize the value of the CHMM by requiring this certification as part of the contract and proposal cycle. The CHMM designation is awarded when a professional achieves a passing score on a standardization examination.
